PLATTSBURGH — Connor Gorman scored four goals Saturday night at Stafford Ice Arena, and he hopes that’s a sign of things to come.
The Red and White game was the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team’s first chance to play something resembling a game, and both Gorman and coach Bob Emery seemed pleased with what they saw.
“I thought it was good,” Gorman said. “Probably could’ve been a little tighter defensively, but with only two-and-a-half lines on each side, it gets a little tiring. But I thought everyone looked good. Lot of good puck movement out there.”
The Cardinals open the season with a home SUNY Athletic Conference game against Potsdam on Friday. They play three straight home contests before hitting the road Nov. 15.
Gorman, who skated for the Red team, was the only player with multiple goals in the intra-squad scrimmage. Twelve others had one each in Red’s 10-6 victory. Three freshmen were among the goal scorers: forwards Graham Yeo and Dakota Mason and defenseman Patrick Hermans.
Gorman was sixth on the team last year with 16 points, including five goals, and he hopes to be even more productive as a sophomore.
“Last year I was a little snake-bitten. This year I feel good,” Gorman said. “I gotta give credit to some of the guys for some of those passes, though. But yeah, hopefully I can keep producing like that.”
Mathieu Cadieux started in net for the Red team, and freshman Connor Creech started for White. Sam Foley also played, and all three goalies ended up with about equal time.
There were two 25-minute periods, and with short benches on both sides, teams were awarded penalty shots instead of power plays. Gorman scored on two penalty shots, and Zach Popp and Adam Scuglia also connected. Cadieux and Foley each stopped one.
