PLATTSBURGH — It took a tiebreaker to determine the first-place team winner for the Section VII boys’ cross country championships Saturday.
Both Beekmantown and Saranac held a combined score of 58, however, the Eagles edged out the Chiefs for first place in the team scores because of its sixth man.
Ticonderoga then placed third with 71 points, Plattsburgh placed fourth with 113 points and Lake Placid placed fifth with 138 points.
The first-place finisher was the Hornets’ Jeriqho Gadway, with a time of 15:22, which was a person best for Gadway. He finished 36 seconds before second-place runner Evan Page from Seton Catholic.
“In the beginning I had a little cramp up, but I told myself to fight through it, and I was okay with the rest,” Gadway said.
Saranac’s Zach LaPage placed third, with a time of 16:16, while Beekmantown’s Colin Quackenbush and Jordan West rounded out the top five with times of 16:44 and 16:57, respectively.
In the girls’ race, Seton Catholic placed first, second and third, for a cumulative score of 40, to capture first place.
Peru was second with 50 points, Saranac third with 77 points, Saranac Lake fourth with 88 points and Plattsburgh finished in fifth place with 114 points.
The Knights’ Margaret Champagne came in first with a time of 18:25, followed by Melissa Whyman and Ashley Leta, with times of 18:47 and 19:17 respectively.
“I felt good, it was cold, but in CVAC it’s always cold, so we’re pretty used to it by now,” Champagne said. “We all worked really hard this season and we’ve all ran really well together.”
Saranac’s Elysha O’Connell placed fourth with a time of, 19:44, while Seton Catholic’s Sofia DeJordy placed fifth, with a time of 19:45.
The Section VII State Qualifying Meet will take place Friday at the Elizabethtown Golf Course. The boys’ race will take off at 1:15 p.m., which will be followed by the girls’ race at 2:15 p.m.
