Hornets, Cougars into 'B' semis

CHAMPLAIN — This time, somebody had to win.

The Northeastern Clinton and Saranac boys’ soccer teams played to two ties during the regular season, but when they met Tuesday in the Section VII Class B quarterfinals, a tie wasn’t an option.

It was another tight contest, but Austin Tetreault made sure the Cougars would be the ones who advanced. His goal in the middle of the second half gave Northeastern Clinton a 1-0 victory.

“Overall, I thought we possessed the ball very well (Tuesday), and we created some very good scoring chances,” Northeastern Clinton coach Dale Hawksby said.

The fourth-seeded Cougars will face No. 1 seed Beekmantown at 5 p.m. Friday in a semifinal matchup at Chazy.

Northeastern Clinton outshot Saranac 16-6. The lone goal came at 19:17 of the second half after Ryan Marks took an indirect kick from the left side.

“Ryan hooked the ball in over the keeper, and Tetreault ran onto the ball and placed it low in the corner,” Hawksby said.

Brady Vassar stopped six shots in the Cougars’ nets. Hawksby said Marks and Brendan Boutin had a good game in the middle, while Nick Leduc played well defensively.

Jarrett Wright had nine saves for the fifth-seeded Chiefs. Hawksby said Austin Myers, Aaron Cross, Codie Gillett and Mitchell Fink were “outstanding” for Saranac.

PLATTSBURGH — Yanis Yahiaoui, Garrett Frady and Jacob Bushey each tallied a goal and an assist as the third-seeded Hornets moved on to the semifinals.

They’ll play No. 2 seed Saranac Lake at 7 p.m. Friday at Chazy.

Yahiaoui put Plattsburgh ahead at 12:06 of the first half with a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. Bushey assisted.

Yahiaoui sent a cross to Frady early in the second, and Frady headed it in for a 2-0 advantage. Bushey made a nice move at the top of the 18 to score the third goal, and Frady assisted.
