---- — SARANAC LAKE — Winterson Joseph’s game-winning goal at 26:50 of the first half helped the North Country Community College men’s soccer team to a 1-0 defeat of Clinton Community College Monday.

It was an evenly-matched game, according to Cougars (2-9-2) coach Gene Bushey.

“It was a back-and-forth affair,” Bushey said. “We had an opportunity to tie the game with 18 minutes remaining in regulation, but the penalty kick was fired high and to the right. Nonetheless, we played really well.”

Down 1-0, Bushey said play picked up in the second half, resulting in quality scoring chances for his club.

“We came out a little quicker in the second half,” Bushey said. “We took it to them during a 15-minute span, but we just couldn’t put one into the back of the net.”

Beau Stanford registered three saves in the shutout performance for the Saints. Adam Goldfarb accumulated five saves in the one-goal loss for Clinton.

North Country led shots in the match, 15-6.

The loss ended the Cougars’ season.

“We had two ties in the beginning of the season,” Bushey said. “We also experienced eight one-goal games where we couldn’t seem to finish at the right time.

“It was a great season, though. The new guys mixed well with our second-year players, and we faired well in a number of games. We played as a group, so I’m really satisfied with the effort in my first year as head coach.”
