MINEVILLE — Moriah football coach Don Tesar said Friday was the first time this season his team played a complete game.
The result was a 47-19 defeat of AuSable Valley in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play at Linney Field.
“We finally played offensively and defensively,” Tesar said. “We didn’t give up big plays, and (the Patriots) worked for the scores that they had against the first group. Offensively, again, I thought that we blocked well. We had numerous backs that had yardage. And it was, I think, just a good, strong game on both sides of the ball.”
Running back Troy Welch picked up where he left off after last week’s six-touchdown performance.
The junior ran in two scores in the first 2:46 Friday. On the first, he found a big hole, got past a coupe of tacklers and cut outside for a 38-yard score on Moriah’s first drive.
AuSable Valley attempted to punt on its next possession, but the snap slipped over the kicker’s head and the ball was downed at the Patriots’ 9-yard line. After a penalty, Welch powered in from the 14, and the Vikings (3-3) got the two-point conversion to make it 14-0.
Welch finished with 131 yards on 14 carries. The first-year varsity player was behind C.J. Raymond on the depth chart but has been the go-to guy the last two weeks because Raymond has a sprained knee.
“C.J. got hurt, and we needed a replacement; I kind of filled that spot,” Welch said. “And I guess I’m doing a good job. Trying to.
“I’ve been working hard every day since the first day of practice. And I guess he was working harder than me at first, so that’s why he started over me. But he’s a great tailback. And both of us — when he comes back (full time) —we’re going to do good work.”
Welch wasn’t the only Moriah back who had success against the Patriots. Skyler Graham had a 2-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
After being sidelined last week, Raymond had five rushing attempts for 58 yards, including a 22-yard scamper for a touchdown that sent the Vikings into halftime with a 34-6 lead.
Tesar said Raymond isn’t at 100 percent, and he wanted to just get the senior a few touches.
The Vikings totaled five rushing touchdowns, and their coach credited the line for the strong ground game.
“It’s because our offensive line has really been working well the last few weeks and blocking open holes,” Tesar said. “It doesn’t matter which of those two (running backs) I have back there, they’ve got big holes and they hit them hard.”
Moriah quarterback Cole Gaddor connected with Rainier Garnica for a 3-yard score in the first half, and Gaddor scored in the third quarter on a sneak. Gaddor went 4-for-6 for 60 yards and no interceptions.
Tyler Pratt made two catches for 29 yards, and Austin Allen grabbed a 30-yard touchdown pass thrown by Sam Russo in the fourth.
The Vikings wore brand-new blue uniforms in the game. Tesar said they were courtesy of an anonymous donation by a former player, and they’ll be worn for just one game each season.
The Vikings and Patriots (1-5) combined for 66 points despite repeatedly giving the ball away in the first half. They combined for three interceptions and four fumbles before halftime, although neither team had a turnover in the second half.
AuSable Valley quarterback John Goodnough had a 6-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and dashed 22 yards to the end zone as time expired in the fourth. He totaled 102 rushing yards and was 10-for-19 for 128 passing yards and three interceptions. Tyler Champine caught four balls for 43 yards, and Sultan Sikandar had three for 52.
Dillon Savage rushed for 55 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown.
