Clinton baseball drops a pair of games to Herkimer

PLATTSBURGH — For the Clinton Community College baseball team, the first game got away late and the second one early.

The Cougars (1-4) dropped consecutive contests to Herkimer County Community College at home Tuesday, 3-2 and 13-4.

“In the first game, I thought we played well, but we were having a tough time offensively,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “In the second game, we did play well defensively and managed to score some runs, but the game got away from us a little bit.”

In the first game, Chris Roenbeck’s home run in first inning and an additional run in the fourth helped the Cougars maintain a two-run lead through four.

However, Kristen Sherman surrendered two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

“They had three hits and scored on a fielder’s choice in the fifth,” Neale said. “Then, they scored the go-ahead run on an error by the third baseman in the following inning.

“Both pitchers did an outstanding job. (Sherman) pitched well. He walked two batters in seven innings of work and threw a lot of strikes.”

Kyle Garrison picked up the win, while Sherman was tagged with the loss.

Anthony Porcelli belted Clinton’s only other hit of the game.

Despite generating four runs on nine hits in the second game, errors and walks troubled the Cougars.

“We were able to swing the bat a little better, but they were driving in runs when we needed to convert on strikeouts,” Neale said. “(Roenbeck), Joe Tolosky and (Porcelli) had multi-hit games.”

The Generals (6-9) scored 13 runs on 13 hits. Jack Burns, Carlos Almonte and Hayden Caffey all registered extra-base hits for Herkimer.

Michael DeCarlo pitched four innings on the mound and received the win, while Russell Merrill accounted for the loss.

“We pitched too many walks and committed some fielding errors,” Neale said. “We’ll keep plugging away.”

Clinton travels to Herkimer Thursday for a 2 p.m. contest.
