Cougars drop two one-run games

---- — UTICA — The Clinton Community College men’s baseball team was competitive in both games Saturday.

Unfortunately for the Cougars, however, they dropped a couple of one-run decisions to host Mohawk Valley Community College.

The Hawks (8-2) edged out a 2-1 win in the opener and then scored a run in the bottom of the eighth for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Anthony Porcelli gave the Cougars a strong pitching performance as he went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits. Porcelli surrendered single runs in the third and fourth innings.

But Charles Parsons limited Clinton to just one run, that coming in the fourth inning, before Brian Imfeld picked up the save.

Russell Merrill led the Cougars with two hits and Joe Tolosky drove in the team’s lone run with a single.

“It was a well-played game,” Clinton coach Tom Neale said. “That’s the best I’ve ever seen Anthony pitch. He didn’t strike out anyone, but walked just two. There were a lot of ground balls, infield pops and fly balls.”

The Cougars left two runners on after they scored their run in the fourth and had two on in the seventh when Imfeld got the final out.

In the nightcap, Chris Roenbeck rapped a three-run homer in the top of the sixth to give Clinton (0-6) a 3-2 lead.

But Mohawk Valley forced extra innings with a run in the home half of the sixth and won it in the eighth on Parsons’ RBI single.

Eric Rock pitched the first seven innings for the Cougars and Jamie Davison took the loss in relief. Imfield, who pitched the eighth inning, was the winning pitcher.

Five players had a hit each for Clinton.

“We played good defense again in the second game,” Neale said. “But we’re just not getting the bats going.

“Both games were very well played by both teams. Mohawk Valley fields the ball extremely well — they made some nice plays.”

The two teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader in Plattsburgh today. But those two contests have been postponed.
