Saranac starts 0-2 at Mingo Bay Tournament

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Saranac baseball team dropped a close game to Watertown and was then blanked by host Waccamaw the first two days at the Mingo Bay Tournament.

Watertown scored an unearned run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 6-5 victory Tuesday, while Waccamaw recorded a 10-0 win in six innings Wednesday. The Chiefs’ game on Thursday was rained out.

Against Watertown, Caleb Keysor and Andrew Tedford rapped out two hits each, with Keysor getting a triple.

Saranac outhit Watertown 9-7 but hurt itself with six errors.

Nate Stanton, who pitched well in relief, ended up taking the loss.

“It was our first day outside, and it showed,” Saranac coach Frank Trudeau said. “We needed to show more confidence defensively because five of their six runs were unearned.

“Our pitchers threw the ball well, especially Stanton, who pitched 5.1 innings in relief. We outhit them but left 11 runners on base.”

The following day, Waccamaw held a 3-0 lead after three before breaking it open in the middle innings.

Justin Colgrove struck out four in going the distance for the pitching win, allowing only an infield single to the Chiefs’ Jake Griffin.

“We played a little better defensively in this game, but overcoming 10 walks was tough,” Trudeau said. “They also made some good defensive plays. It was their 17th game of the season.”

Saranac will play today against St. Albans, West Virginia.
