Inside play helps Eagles past Chiefs

SARANAC — Beekmantown’s post players were too much for Saranac Wednesday night.

Shannon Ryan scored 19 points and Emily Anderson added 10 as the Eagles won the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls’ basketball game 39-32.

“Basically we had a real hard time with their size, keeping Shannon Ryan away from the low post,” Saranac coach Tim Newell said. “She did a nice job getting to her spots, and if she didn’t get the first make, she got offensive boards and putbacks.”

The Chiefs were within 29-28 by the end of the third quarter, and then the Eagles outscored them 10-4 in the fourth.

“The kids played hard,” Newell said. “I thought we did a real good job hanging in the game. We got down by 10 or 12 at one point, and we made a run to close it back to a 2-point game.

“We need to be more confident offensively; we need more kids looking to score. And we definitely need to do a better job at the free-throw line.” Saranac went 3-for-13 from the stripe.

Kayla Napper led the Chiefs with 11 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists. Kaitlyn Bowman scored seven, and Victoria Phaneuf had six points, eight rebounds and four steals. Emma Newell chipped in five rebounds and four steals.

“Give Beekmantown credit, they did a nice job running their offense,” Tim Newell said. “I think it’s a situation where we can take a lot from this game and definitely can improve. We expect to get better as the season goes on, and hopefully next time we can get a better outcome against them.”
