Brandy McDonald’s RBI single scores Shannon Brown with the winning run in the 8th as The Monopole defeats Adams Glass/State Police 6-5 to win its second Peru Slo-Pitch Softball title. Mike Bieber, Dave Mendofik and Jeff Reisdorf get 2 hits to back winning pitcher Jim Tyler. Kevin Leavine and George Dyer hit homers for the Troopers.
Mark Gilligan is named athletic director at Saranac Lake Central, succeeding John Raymond, who is named principal of the Middle School.
Gil Burnell defeats George Bouyea, Jr. 2 and 1 to win the Men’s club championship while Barbara Maille takes the women’s title at Bluff Point.

Jill Provost singles in the winning run as City Korina rallies to beat Chazy 10-9 in the Women’s City Softball League playoff championships. Doreen Lucia chips in with a big 2-run single. Donna Dixon hits a 2-run homer for Chazy.
Jeanine Meyer, 19, becomes the first skater in the 15-year history of the Plattsburgh Figure Skating Club to earn a gold in figures testing.
Craig Monette’s monster grand slam gives Sleepy Hollow a 5-4 victory over Tony’s and its second Malone Fast-Pitch Softball League championship in 3 years. Winning pitcher Art Reyome helps his cause with 2 hits. Frank Gardiner has a triple for Tony’s.
Lake Placid’s Linda and Diana Friedlander earn a top-5 mother-daughter ranking in eastern tennis.

Andy Morrelli goes 4-for-4 as Barcomb’s TV completes a 3-game sweep of The Crossing Restaurant in the Champlain Slo-Pitch Softball League finals. Frank Dumas knocks in 3 runs and Jim Barcomb, 2, while Gary DeCoste pitches a 6-hitter. Rick Lemire and Larry Belrose each get 2 hits for The Crossing.
Former Saranac Lake coach Butler Sullivan shoots a 76 to win the Anheuser-Busch Golf Tournament at the Lake Placid Resort. Caroline Darlington wins the Ladies’ Division with an 83.
Reese Babcock, Skip Reynolds, Krissy Andrews and Sarah Lynch win their respective divisions in the Elizabethtown Social Center Tennis Tournament.
Dom Szambowski scores twice and Ace Jopling stars in goal as the Sundog Express of Lake Placid completes an 11-0-1 season with a 2-1 victory over the Elizabethtown Hawks in Adirondack Amateur Soccer Association play. Matt Morris scores for the Hawks.
The Bluff Point Ladies hold off host Malone to clinch their first Interclub Golf Championship. Gen Burdo, Leah Lorry, Henri Bouyea, Marge Bouyea and Gert Rusterholtz are members of the winning team.
Anne Gorton of Plattsburgh posts a 1,235 score to take third in the 60-64 age group at the New York State Senior Singles Bowling Championships in Binghamton.

Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Burdo retire the Rubado Trophy with their third victory in the Mixed Scotch 2-Ball Tournament at Bluff Point. The Burdos beat John Terry and Claire Pulrang on the second hole of their sudden-death playoff.
Adirondack Slo-Pitch Softball League power McGee’s Texaco defeats The King and His Court with star pitcher Eddie Feigner, 4-2, in an exhibition game at Bailey Avenue.
Lynne Fortin, Susan Botten and Taryn Archer are the hitting stars as Beekmantown beats Peru 15-11 to win the Clinton County Babe Ruth softball title. Marilyn Dominy is the winning pitcher. Lisa Tessier and Sarah Neyenhouse each collect 3 hits for Peru. Sue Ellen Stay takes the loss.
50 YEARS AGO (1963)
Cliff Haven wins the Clinton County Swimkhana for the fourth consecutive year. Sandy Stevens of Cliff Haven and Dannemora’s Bobby LaFave are the only double winners.
Dick Dandrow pitches a two-hitter and helps his cause with 3 hits as Wise Chips captures the Plattsburgh Babe Ruth League title with a 19-4 thumping of Merkel’s. Gordy Coryer and Mike Melios contribute 2-run singles. Sabourin and Mousseau get hits for Merkel’s.
The Long Ball Hitters, with Jack Snell, Charlie Andrews, Jr., Wayne Monroe and Russ Preedom, win the Tuesday Twilight Golf League at Plattsburgh Country Club.
Wally Stone tosses a 3-hitter, Jack Ferrara clubs a homer and Wayne Guay steals home to lead Arnie’s Restaurant to a 2-0 victory over American Legion Post 20 in the Rouses Point Tournament of Champions in softball. Dick Perry has 2 of the Legion’s 3 hits.

Jim Brown, Jr. strikes out 20 batters and scatters 5 hits in the Plattsburgh Genesees 14-2 thrashing of the Fourth Ward in Adirondack Baseball League play. Gerry Martineau and Jim Brown, Sr. each go 3-for-4 while Jim Brown, Jr. lashes out 2 doubles.
Former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Sharkey is the referee for a professional wrestling card that attracts 3,200 fans to Bailey Avenue park.
Dave Scales belts a homer in the 14th to lift the Plattsburgh Tars to a 2-1 victory over Dannemora. The Tars then go on to win Game 2, 3-1, to win the Clinton County Junior League title. Frank Dukette pitches 21 innings for Dannemora.
John Bingel allows only 2 hits as Lyon Mountain captures the Clinton County peewee title with a 10-3 victory over Peru. Carleton Rounds raps a bases-loaded triple and Clyde Powers adds a grand slam. Jim Boyd has a triple for Peru.
Chateaugay Coach Paul Amrod contributes 2 doubles and a single as the Ponies defeat Hogansburg 7-5 in St. Lawrence Valley Baseball League playoff action.

Robina, owned by Henry Meron of Plattsburgh, comes in third in the Malone Rotary Pace at the Franklin County Fair.
Dannemora’s Jack Carrigan, stationed on Long Island, knocks out Brooklyn’s Gasper Abruzzi in the fourth round of their 135-pound boxing match. Carrigan is a protege of former middleweight champion Walter “Popeye” Woods.
