PHS, Saranac slide into 'B' semis

PLATTSBURGH — Taoufik Maknani scored 11 points and Plattsburgh High fought through Northeastern Clinton’s tough zone defense for a 48-40 win Wednesday in the Section VII Class B boys’ basketball quarterfinals.

“We beat them twice in the regular season, but NCCS is a very proud program and I knew it was going to be a lot different in sectionals,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Hartmann said. “Coach (Robb) Garrand and his guys did an incredible job with their 2-3 zone (Wednesday). They took away anything that was open in the previous games.

“(Jon Filion) had a huge game — he had a great game on the boards. And Tom Bedard played his heart out.”

The fourth-seeded Hornets advanced to face Peru at 7:30 Saturday.

Garrett Frady had eight points and seven steals for Plattsburgh, and T.J. LaPoint added eight points and nine rebounds. Damon LaBorde scored seven, while Nate Harrington pulled down nine rebounds.

The Hornets held a 24-22 lead at the half.

“In three games against them, we’ve given up four threes. So we really took away their outside game,” Hartmann said. “It was a back-and-forth battle. It was a great game, and I’m proud of my boys.”

Bedard paced the fifth-seeded Cougars with 15 points, and Filion had 13. Rodney Grimshaw scored 10.

SARANAC — Jeremy Bullis finished with a double-double of 14 points and 16 rebounds as the third-seeded Chiefs defeated the Red Storm.

Saranac (12-6) will play No. 2 seed Beekmantown in the Class B semifinals at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Chiefs received a balanced offensive attack with Michael Conway, John Maye and Nick Daniels getting eight points each. Tanner Rascoe had seven.

Kevin Morgan led Saranac Lake with 15 points, and Kellen Munn followed with 10.

The Red Storm played the Chiefs even for the final three quarters, but it was a 17-2 Saranac run in the first stanza that made the difference.

“We had a great first quarter,” Saranac coach Brent Denis said. “Our kids were well prepared for the game and capitalized on their strengths. We also had 17 steals as a team.

“Connor Christopherson did a great job defensively on Morgan in the first quarter. That set the tone for us, and we tried to rotate fresh bodies against him the rest of the way. I was worried about the rebounding because Saranac Lake has some big kids. But Bullis was phenomenal on the boards tonight.”

Denis said the Red Storm wouldn’t go away, however.

“They’re a hard-nosed team,” he said. “They played hard for 32 minutes, and we knew they were going to do so.

“But it was a good win for us, and we seem to be peaking at the right time of the season.”
