Fastpitch meeting set for tonight

AUSABLE FORKS — The AuSable Forks men’s fastpitch league will be holding a meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Riverside Lanes in AuSable Forks. All returning and any interested new teams are asked to attend.

Vaughn wins North Bowl Singles Shootout

PLATTSBURGH — North Bowl Lanes recently held a Ladies Singles Shootout and Plattsburgh’s Brooke Vaughn took first place and won $125. Vaughn averaged 239 for the day. She qualified with a scratch score of 223-235-235-693 and had scratch scores of 244, 247, 259 and 235 in the finals.

Jess Brown was the high qualifier with a handicap score of 736 and won $20.

In the match play head-to-head matches, with handicap, Vaughn defeated Brianne Borkenhagen, 244-205; Kendra Hawksby, 260-201; Donna Dragoon, 272-216; and Del Rock, 235-216. Rock made it to the finals by defeating Kathy Young, 204-173; Katie Williams, 216-206; and Brenda Ireland, 240-215.

There were 29 entries and over $900 was raised as a fundraiser for a local bowler, who has become ill during the bowling season.

North Bowl Singles Shootout Championship set

PLATTSBURGH — The regular season of North Bowl Singles Shootouts has been concluded and the Singles Shootout Championship will be held at 1 p.m. on February 17. To be eligible, a bowler must have competed in at least three of the five tournaments and be in the top 20 for all-star points.

Bowlers must arrive by 12:30 p.m. and contact a tournament director to confirm that they are bowling. For more information, call John Munson, Bob Trombley or Bob Munson, at 561-1690.

Whiteface Mountain to host ski clinic

LAKE PLACID — There will be an adaptive ski clinic at Whiteface Mountain on Saturday, February 9. The clinic is open to any person with special needs who would like to try skiing for the first time, and for those who already ski but would enjoy skiing with other challenged individuals.

Equipment and lift ticket are included in a $25 fee. The clinic will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end with a fun race on the mixing bowl trail at 11:30 a.m. There will also be a race for those who can ski unassisted on the Bear Trail at 1:30 p.m. To sign up, contact the Adaptive Ski Office, at Whiteface Mountain, 946-2223, ext. 367.

Rouses Point to hold ice fishing derby

ROUSES POINT — The Rouses Point Sportsmen’s Club’s 20th-Annual Ice Fishing Derby will be held February 16 and 17. The fishing hours will be from noon on Saturday through 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Boundary lines will include: New York, mouth of the Great Chazy River north to the Canadian Border; and Vermont, Kelly Bay North to the Canadian Border.

Weigh stations hours at the Rouses Point Sportsmen’s Club are Saturday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entry fee is $15 and tickets are being sold at The Last Resort, Lake Champlain Fish Company and Cornerstone Drug. The prizes include: Northern Pike, first $350; second $150; and third $100; and for Pickerel, first $50.

A fish fry/chowder/membership drive will follow the closing of the weight station on Sunday at The Last Resort, free of charge for club members and derby participants depending on fish donations from the weigh station. The meal is a $5 contribution for all others.

Winners announced in Post 1619 Winterfest 2013

WEST PLATTSBURGH — The Barn Dogs won the Labatt Blue Curling Competition at the Winterfest 2013 held at American Legion Post 1619. The Barn Dogs defeated the Dog Doctors in overtime to win the competition in the 38-team field that was played on two rinks. The Barn Dogs consisted of Rupe Dashnaw, Frank Dashnaw, Larrie Seymour and John Burke. Each team member won a trophy and a foam curling stone hat.

The Dog Doctors were comprised of Healey Mayette, Kade Sewell, Matt Goldwebber and Casey Mohrien. The Pink Curlers, led by Eloise Samolis, were third.

In the broomball event, the Budweiser Caribou Cup Competition went to The North Country Boys with a 5-4 win over T-Bone’s Fools.

The Bud Light Snow-Pitch Frostball Softball Tournament ended up with co-champions Big Boys and Big Earl’s.

Winter Adventure Race series underway

PLATTSBURGH — Fifty-five adventurous kids made their way to the Champlain Valley Transportation Museum for the first Winter Adventure Race of February, held by the Town of Plattsburgh Recreation Department and Clinton County Youth Bureau. Children participated in a snow-obstacle course made up of snow piles, tunnels, tires and more. The second race in the series will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, with registration beginning at 2 p.m. For more information, please contact the Youth Bureau at 565-4750.

High School Rugby registration Feb. 14, 26

WILLSBORO — Adirondack High School Rugby will be holding registration for the 2013 season for boys’ and girls’ rugby teams at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Willsboro High School Auditorium and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, in the Lake Placid High School Library. A short information session will be held and cool door prizes awarded.

Registration fees for USA Rugby and Adirondack Rugby are $75 total for the season (scholarships available). Forms are available at registration.

Players must be in ninth to 12th grade and attending school in the Adirondacks to be eligible. Practices will be held in the Willsboro/Peru and Lake Placid/Saranac Lake

areas beginning in the end of February with games being held on Sundays in April and May. All high school athletes in the Adirondacks are encouraged to attend.

Cole to Appear at Coaches Corner Event

PLATTSBURGH — The Plattsburgh State athletics department, in conjunction with the Ground Round Grill & Bar, will be hosting its third Coaches Corner event on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013. The event is free and open to the public.

From 5-7 p.m., Plattsburgh State women’s basketball coach Cheryl Cole will be on hand at the Ground Round to mingle with fans and answer questions about the 2012-13 season.

With five games remaining in the regular season, the Cardinals own an overall record of 9-11 and a SUNYAC mark of 5-8. Plattsburgh State currently sits in eighth place in the SUNYAC standings and will take part in a pivotal pair of conference games this Friday and Saturday against Brockport and SUNY Geneseo at Memorial Hall to try and move back into the mix for the upcoming playoffs.

In their most recent action, the Cardinals were on the wrong end of a 56-52 score at Oneonta State on Friday (Feb. 1) before dropping a 72-60 decision at league-leading New Paltz the following afternoon.

So far, five different dates have been set for the 2013 Coaches Corner series that features five head coaches from various Plattsburgh State athletic teams. All of the Coaches Corner events will take place on a Wednesday, and the dates and coaches who will be featured are listed below.

Field House announces public skating

PLATTSBURGH — Officials at the Plattsburgh State Field House have announced public skating sessions for the month of February. Public Skating sessions are scheduled from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. on the following dates: Feb. 9, 16, 17 and 24.

Admission is $2 for the public and $1 for SUNY Plattsburgh students, faculty and staff with a valid college identification. Skate rentals are available at the same rates.
