Blue Bombers stun Eagles in girls' hockey

LAKE PLACID — Last season, the Lake Placid girls’ hockey team squandered a 3-2 third-period lead, dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to rival Beekmantown in Upstate Girls’ Hockey League play.

The Blue Bombers, though, weren’t going to let history repeat itself Monday.

Morgan Meyer, Sam Barney and Emily Godin each registered goals, helping Lake Placid upset defending state champion Beekmantown 3-2 at the 1932 Rink.

The win snapped the Eagles’ (2-1, 0-1) eight-game winning streak, marking their first loss in 321 days.

“Beekmantown has always been a strong team,” Blue Bombers (3-2, 2-0) coach Sandy Huber said. “As defending champions, they were the favorite (Monday). We lost to them in overtime last year, and I think our girls remembered how it felt to be that close.

“(Monday), we just needed to believe that we could do it, and we needed every player to give 100 percent and play as a team. Our girls did just that, and they proved to themselves they could succeed if they played together.”

After Godin gave Lake Placid a three-goal advantage at 1:50 the third period, Beekmantown put together a late-game rally.

Brittany Miner scored 52 seconds after Godin, and Brielle Carnright’s unassisted tally cut the Eagles’ differential to one goal with just 2:18 showing on the clock.

Facing a barrage of shots, Blue Bombers goaltender Tanner Stanton stood tall, helping Lake Placid secure the one-goal win.

“I am incredibly proud of our girls, and I hope they all hold on to this feeling and use it as motivation for the rest of the season,” Huber said.

Beekmantown maintained the upper hand in shots on goal, leading that department by a 29-12 margin.

Elizabeth Bimonte and Alexa Whitney each recorded assists in the win.

Katie Matott was credited with a helper on Miner’s tally.

Stanton was credited with her third victory between the pipes, fending off 27-of-29 shots faced. Kayleigh Bell was tagged with the loss, accumulating nine saves on 12 shots for the Eagles.
