PLATTSBURGH — The Northern Devils 18U softball team recently took first place in the Summer Opener Tournament in Seekonk, Mass.
The Devils got off to a slow start in the event with a 2-1 loss to the Central Massachusetts Thunder. Kourtnie Campbell allowed just two hits in taking the loss.
Dani Dayton was then the hard-luck loser in a 2-1 setback to the New England Impact. Dayton scattered five hits. Stephanie LaValley had a double and triple.
The Devils then got things going in the right direction.
They rolled to an 11-0 victory over the EB Lady Bulldogs as LaValley went the distance for the win. Sam Fletcher led the offense with three hits, while Campbell, Brittany Miner and Danielle Balestrini added two hits apiece. Balestini had a triple, while Brette Campbell and Kelly Neenan added doubles.
On Sunday, the Devils recorded a 9-5 win over the Rhode Island Aftershock in eight innings. Dayton was the starting pitcher and Campbell took over in the sixth. Miner, Balestrini and Brette Campbell led the way with two hits apiece, with Miner getting a double.
In the semifinals, the Devils had a rematch with the Central Massachusetts Thunder and this time the local team pulled out a 5-2 win, with Campbell picking up the victory. Miner, who had two hits, crushed a fastball over the left-center field fence to expand on a 3-2 advantage.
Then, in the championship game, the Devils recorded a 12-4 decision over the AP Pride from Warwick, Rhode Island. Campbell took over in the third inning with the game tied at 3-all. Fletcher accounted for three hits to power the offense, while Miner and LaValley each added two hits. LaValley, Balestrini and Dayton all had triples.
