Cardinal women fall in SUNYAC finale

BROCKPORT — It was more of the same frustration for the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team Saturday.

The Cardinals held a 15-10 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks over the No. 25-ranked College at Brockport.

But two goals by Katie Gildemeyer gave the Golden Eagles (14-1-2, 7-1-1) a 2-1 victory over the hard-luck Cardinals (6-10-1, 2-6-1), who closed out their SUNY Athletic Conference season.

“We played really well today and we had a good weekend,” said Plattsburgh coach Karen Waterbury. “The girls gave me a great effort. We were able to win (Friday) and the result didn’t show how well the girls played (Saturday).

“After the game, the girls were pleased with how well they played. But obviously, they wanted to win. We created some good chances.”

Brockport’s first shot on goal, which came at 14:40 of the first half, resulted in Gildemeyer’s first goal of the game as she sent a shot over the head of Plattsburgh keeper Danielle Schmitt and into the net.

Then, after Devin McMahon had a shot on goal for Plattsburgh, Brockport got into transition and a shot deflected off the crossbar. Gildemeyer, however, was there to put in the rebound to make it 2-0 at the 34:46 mark.

The Cardinals held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half, but were unable to get on the board.

Plattsburgh did get on the board with 13:23 gone in the second half when Lauren Gonyea sent a shot over the head of Brockport keeper Hannah Conine and into the net.

But the Golden Eagles then buckled down defensively and the Cardinals were unable to get another shot on goal the rest of the way.

“They had two decent goals and they made the most of their opportunities because I felt we dominated the first half,” said Waterbury.

“We came out real strong in the second half as well and got one of the goals back. But we couldn’t get the second.”

Conine finished with five saves for Brockport and Schmitt stopped three shots for Plattsburgh.

The Cardinals close out their season with a 4 p.m. nonconference game against Norwich University on Wednesday at the Field House Soccer Complex.
