Cougars take advantage of free throws to defeat Cayuga

AUBURN — The Clinton Community College men’s basketball team converted 9-of-24 free throw attempts in its 14-point defeat of the RPI JV Wednesday.

It made sure to make its free throws count Saturday.

The Cougars (8-2, 5-2), ranked fourth in Region III, converted 21 free throws in their 82-67 defeat of Cayuga Community College.

Clinton also utilized its rebounding, jumping out to a 39-32 halftime lead.

“Our first-half lead was a result of strong play on the boards,” Cougars coach Kevin Daugherty said. “We outrebounded them and played good half-court defense.

“In the second half, we went to a full-court press, which they struggled with. We were able to go ahead by as many as 20 points.”

The Spartans, ranked fifth in Region III, were able to fight back, cutting their deficit to five points with less than four minutes remaining.

“Our advantage at that point was that we were in the bonus midway through the second half,” Daugherty said. “They were forced to foul when trapping us in the half court.”

Bayron Carter paced Clinton with 26 points and 13 rebounds, reaching double-double status. Kyree Hull totaled 19 points and five steals.

Daugherty said Jamie Davison managed the backcourt well, registering 15 points, four steals and five assists. Mykelle Krecko was a force down low, firing 15 points, 12 rebounds, seven blocks and six assists.

The Cougars play Onondaga Community College at 1 p.m. today.

“It’s a big Region III game,” Daugherty said. “Onondaga scores a lot of points and love to run. We have to work even hard (today) to control the tempo of the game.”
