Patriots pull out 'Challenge' victory

SCHENECTADY — Taylor Saltus calmly sank two free throws with 11.5 seconds remaining Saturday to provide the margin of difference in the AuSable Valley girls’ basketball team’s 53-52 victory over Newark in the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge.

The Patriots had a 2-point lead when Kenna Lauer nailed a 3-pointer to give Newark a 52-51 advantage with 23 seconds left.

Saltus then drove the lane and was fouled. After she hit the two free throws to give AuSable Valley a 53-52 lead, the Patriots kept Newark from attempting a last-second shot.

Saltus finished with 22 points and Meghan Strong added 17. The two combined to hit seven 3-pointers. One of Strong’s 3-pointers was the 100th of her varsity career.

Nicole Collins led Newark, which held a 30-25 lead at the half, with 14 points. Lauer and Jessica Shields added 13 apiece.

PLATTSBURGH — The Blue Bombers held a 7-5 lead in a cold-shooting first half before going on a 13-5 run in the third quarter to open up some breathing room in a Northern Basketball League win.

“Both teams had trouble adjusting to the open space of the Field House in the first half,” Lake Placid coach Jeff Potter said.

“Lake Placid used pressure defense to open the third quarter and converted four quick baskets off turnovers, which turned out to be the difference in the game.”

Hanna Potter paced the Blue Bombers with eight points, while Adele Jesmer and Alexis Megliore added six apiece.

Taylor Bigelow scored four points for the Warriors.
