CYO Basketball League season begins today

MALONE — The Franklin Community Youth Organizations (CYO) Basketball League will open its 48th season today with a full slate of games at St. Joe’s Gym. There are a total of 14 teams competing this season: seven varsity and seven “splinter” or JV teams.

On Sunday, North Star will travel to Ogdensburg for a pair of games (splinters and varsity), and Chateaugay will travel to Saranac Middle School for a splinters-only contest.

This season marks the 48th year that the league has been run under the leadership of Ken Cring, with Wayne Walbridge as assistant director.

Today’s schedule:

11 a.m.- Bangor vs. St. John Bosco Splinters

11:45 a.m.- North Star vs. Maranatha Splinters

12:30 p.m.- North Star vs. Langdon Land Surveyors

1:30 p.m.- Maranatha vs. St. John Bosco

2:30 p.m.- Bangor vs. Chateaugay

Holdiay Ice Show set for Dec. 15

PLATTSBURGH — The Skating Club of the Adirondacks will present its 2013 Holiday Ice Show at 3 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Plattsburgh State Field House. The show will feature a wide range of figure skaters from beginners to advanced, all performing to favorite holiday music. The Plattsburgh High School Select Vocal Ensemble will open the show.

Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students, and free for children four years old and younger. Tickets include open skating for everyone after the show.

Jingle Bell Snowshoe Race set for Sunday

PAUL SMITHS — With the current snow conditions, it appears there will be snow at the Paul Smith’s College VIC for the 19th-annual Jingle Bell Snowshoe Race to be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

Race registration will begin at 9:30 p.m. at the Paul Smith’s College VIC lobby. The Jingle Bell Snowshoe Race is the first snowshoe race of the season in the United States. This year’s event is not a national qualifier, but those who take part in the 5K will enjoy the traditional course.

The event will also feature an .8-mile cross-country snowshoe race for children 14 and under. They made choose to run the 5K race if they desire. The event will have six age groups. Age group prizes will be awarded to the top three in seven age classes.
