CORTLAND — It was more frustration for the Plattsburgh State women’ soccer team on Saturday.
After battling back to tie the game and force overtime, the Cardinals dropped a tough 2-1 decision at Cortland in SUNY Athletic Conference play.
Kelly Knight tallied the game-winning goal 6:04 into the first extra session.
Following a scoreless first half, the Red Dragons (4-3-4, 2-0-2) were awarded a penalty kick and Amanda Margolis found the lower right corner of the net at 11:20 into the second stanza.
Minutes later, Cassidy Clavet nearly tied it for the Cardinals (3-7-1, 1-2-0) when she sent a shot off the crossbar.
Plattsburgh did eventually get the equalizer when Lauren Gonyea one-timed a loose ball into the net from 25 yards out 26:28 into the second half.
The contest went into overtime and Emma Whittle sent a long thru ball to Knight, who poked the ball inside the right post for the game-winner.
For the second day in a row on the road, the Cardinals held the edge in shots only to lose the game.
This time, Plattsburgh outshot Cortland, 22-19, including a 12-9 margin in the second half. Rachel Axt made three saves in net for the Red Dragons, while Kristy Kirkpatrick stopped four shots for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals, after opening their SUNYAC schedule with three games on the road, are home this coming weekend for games with Oneonta on Friday at 4 p.m. and New Paltz on Saturday at 1 p.m.
