St. Lawrence sweeps Cardinal tennis

CANTON — The Plattsburgh State women’s tennis team saw its winning streak come to an end Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals suffered a 9-0 sweep at the hands of the St. Lawrence Saints in a nonconference match at the Sammis Tennis Courts.

Emily Carlin and Kaitlyn Healy paired for No. 1 doubles, losing to St. Lawrence’s Elkie Vandenbeemt and Morgan McNeal, 8-0. Anna Young and Ceorgie Comber picked up a win at No. 2 doubles with an 8-3 score against Plattsburgh State’s Sarah Drexinger and Jacqueline Cireillo. Meghan Ryan and Ally Demeter represented the Cardinals at No. 3 doubles, dropping their match, 8-2, to the Saints’ duo of Laura Golhar and Bridget Fleming.

The Saints controlled most of the play in the six singles matchups. Carlin was defeated by Vandenbeemt at first singles (6-1, 6-0) while Healy suffered a loss at second singles (6-1, 6-1). Olivia Wyand, Ryan, Drexinger and Ciriello also came out on the losing end of their singles matches.

St. Lawrence improves to 1-0 with the win. Plattsburgh State drops to 4-6 on the year.

The Cardinals close out the regular season tomorrow afternoon on the road with a nonconference match at 1 p.m. against Hamilton.
