Thompson's header leads Lake Placid

PLATTSBURGH — The Lake Placid boys’ soccer team had beaten Seton Catholic every time the two teams matched up the last two seasons, and it took until the second overtime, but the Blue Bombers pulled out another victory Wednesday.

Nzoni Thompson scored both goals in Lake Placid’s 2-1 Northern Soccer League win.

Both teams appeared in this week’s Class C state rankings, with the Blue Bombers at 15th and the Knights at 18th.

“It’s a great spirit between the two clubs,” Lake Placid coach Stuart Hemsley said. The Knights “are small in numbers, but they’re high in quality. They’ve just got players that can play, and it means that we’re challenged to play. And I’m trying to get our boys to play like Seton does.”

The teams were tied 1-1 after 80 minutes. Both got one solid shot on goal during the first sudden-death overtime period, but they needed a second extra session to decide it. The Blue Bombers (5-3-1, 5-2-1 NSL) had a good opportunity early in the second overtime when Seton Catholic’s Keagen Briggs stopped a hard shot and the ball remained loose in front. There was a scramble, and Lake Placid got another shot off, but Briggs turned it away.

Then, after a corner kick, the ball bounced off several heads before coming to Thompson at the right side, and the junior forward headed it just inside the post. Alex Brandes earned the assist.

Lake Placid was glad to come out with the win after giving up three second-half goals in a loss at Elizabethtown-Lewis on Monday.

“It’s really pushing us forward here,” Thompson said. “We had a tough loss Monday, and we’re bouncing back here.”

Play was back and forth for most of the first half, with the shots almost even. Seton Catholic’s best opportunity came on a second chance after a corner kick, but Lake Placid goal keeper Chris Kordziel got over in time to block the shot with his legs.
