Clinton women fall to Mohawk Valley

UTICA — Silvana Giovannone scored three goals and Mohawk Valley Community College rolled to a 5-0 victory over Clinton Community College in women’s soccer on Saturday.

Meghan Carlo and Giovannone scored in the first half for a 2-0 lead before Giovannone tallied twice and Malia Crumb once after intermission.

Vanessa Jecko turned away four shots to record the shutout in net for Mohawk Valley (9-2).

Courtney Backus made 10 saves for the Cougars, who were outshot by a 25-5 margin.

“We knew going in that Mohawk Valley was a strong team that hadn’t lost in the region yet,” Clinton coach Kaila Sciascia said. “We had a few nagging injuries and unfortunately weren’t able to fight through that. We have to improve our mental toughness.

“We’ll have a hard week of practice and get ready for next weekend.”

Clinton is at Jefferson Community College on Saturday and then home for SUNY Delhi on Sunday.
