Cougars net three in 2nd half to beat Red Storm

CHAMPLAIN — Northeastern Clinton broke loose for three second-half goals Thursday night and pulled away to a 3-0 victory over Saranac Lake in Northern Soccer League boys’ soccer action.

“For the first time this year we had a healthy team and it showed by us playing our best game of the year,” Northeastern coach Dale Hawksby said.

“I thought we controlled the middle of the field and our defense shut out a very good Saranac Lake team.”

Following a scoreless first 40 minutes, Austin Tetreault gave the Cougars the lead for good at the 7:38 mark. Garrett Begore then made it 2-0 with a goal at 17:43. Brendan Boutin assisted on both.

Tetreault closed out the scoring with his second goal of the game at 24:55, with Chase Sample assisting.

Brady Vassar made six saves to record the shutout in the Northeastern Clinton nets, and Oliver Holmes stopped nine shots for the Red Storm.

“Garrett Begore and Brendan Boutin played well for us, while David Cluckey and Bradley Shumway did well for Saranac Lake,” Hawksby said.

“Both teams played solid soccer,” Westport coach Mike Davis said.
