---- — AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The long bus ride home for the Plattsburgh State men’s baseball team is going to seem even longer.
The Cardinals ended their annual trip to Florida on a disappointing note Saturday in the RussMatt Invitational.
Plattsburgh (3-9, 1-2) continued to struggle offensively as it dropped a 3-0 decision to Fredonia in SUNY Athletic Conference play. The Cardinals lost two of three games to the Blue Devils over the weekend.
Plattsburgh finished the Florida trip with a 3-7 record.
“We’re tentative at the plate and nobody is having fun,” Plattsburgh coach Kris Doorey said. “Everybody is looking for someone else to be that guy.
“All the players have to look in the mirror. I do every day.”
Once again, Plattsburgh got a quality pitching start.
Corey Grossman allowed six hits, two runs (one earned), did not walk anyone and struck out six in going seven innings.
“Corey pitched two great games down here and has two losses to show for it,” Doorey said.
But the Cardinals, who have scored two runs or less in five of their games thus far, could not get to Fredonia’s Zachary Hugg, who went the nine innings for the shutout. Hugg was solid as he allowed six hits, walked one and fanned four.
“We don’t work the counts,” Doorey said. “The pitchers we faced down here aren’t any better than any of our pitchers. It’s more of a mindset.”
Conner Lorenzo singled in a run in the second inning and that would prove to be the only run Fredonia would need.
Plattsburgh errors, three in all, then led to Fredonia scoring single runs in the seventh and ninth innings.
“It was a 2-0 game until they scored another run on an error in the ninth,” Doorey said. “If they don’t score that inning, maybe they take their pitcher out of the game after we get the leadoff guy on in the bottom of the ninth.
“Maybe we get the momentum. But we don’t ever get to that. And we make errors at inopportune times.”
Ian Gallagher, Matt Casilio and Lorenzo powered the Blue Devils (3-2, 2-1) with two hits each.
J.D. Springer represented the lone Plattsburgh player to get two hits. Luke Weaver, Brian Latulipe, Mike Mulvihill and Casey Brighton each added one.
“We didn’t get a leadoff batter on until the ninth,” Doorey said. “We get a lot of two-out runners and don’t get any big hits.
“We let them score the first run of the game. We’ve tried everything to get the team going offensively. We’ll just have to keep working on it.”
The Cardinals are scheduled to host Lyndon State on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader before hosting SUNYAC power Cortland in a three-game set over the weekend.
“That’s wishful thinking more than anything,” Doorey said. “We may have to go back on the road to play Cortland. We’ll see what happens.”
