Plattsburgh Roadrunners fall in state title game

AMHERST — The Plattsburgh Roadrunners of the Plattsburgh Youth Hockey Association dropped a 5-4 double-overtime loss to Cheektowaga Sunday in the 16U Tier II tournament AT.

On Friday and Saturday, the Roadrunners went 1-1-1 in round-robin play, tying Nassau 2-2 before losing to Clarene 3-2 and defeating the Long Island Rebels 7-1.

With the three-game split, Plattsburgh finished second in its bracket and crossed over to play the Long Island Edge in the semifinal round Sunday.

After a 4-0 blanking of the Edge, the Roadrunners advanced to play Cheektowaga in the state championship game later that day.

Down 3-1 and 4-2, Plattsburgh pulled its goalie and was able to get the equalizer, sending the game into overtime.

However, Long Island converted on a scoring opportunity in the second overtime session for the one-goal win.

The Roadrunners, however, earned a spot in the National Championships in Troy, Mich., April 3 to 7.
