Indians wrap up CVAC season with win

PERU — Peru built up a big lead at the half Thursday night and closed out its Champlain Valley Athletic Conference girls’ basketball regular season with a 51-41 victory over Saranac Lake.

Meghan Mazzella led the Indians (11-7, 9-7) with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Brianna Hackett added 14 points. Mary Mazzella helped out with five assists and five steals.

Katy Buckley paced the Red Storm with 15 points and was followed by Nicole Viscardo with 13 and Regan Kieffer, eight.

The Indians jumped out to a 33-13 advantage at the half and took a 48-24 edge into the fourth.

“We came out with a lot of intensity right from the start and played well,” Peru coach David Baroody said. “Saranac Lake, however, never quit and played hard to the end.”

Willsboro 55, Wells 39

Wells— The Indians were up early after the first quarter, but the Warriors stepped up their game in the second, outscoring the Indians 15-2.

Kyli Swires had 14 points and Amanda Mahoney had 15 for the Warriors as they outscored the Indians in the final three quarters.

Brittany Woodward led the scoring for Wells with 20 points and had six rebounds and three assists. Samantha Zemken also had 11 points for the Indians.
