Redford free-throw shoot Sunday

REDFORD — The Redford Knights of Columbus will hold their annual free-throw competition for boys and girls ages 10-14 on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Assumption of Mary School in Redford.

Competition will begin at 1 p.m. with the gymnasium open for practice at noon. Proof of age will be helpful, but not required at this time.

Cards’ Schermerhorn earns SUNYAC honor

CORTLAND — Senior Amanda Schermerhorn was named the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, it was announced Monday by the league office.

Hailing from Scotia, Schermerhorn led the Plattsburgh State women’s track and field squad to a third-place finish at the St. Lawrence Invitational Saturdayby flying to a first-place finish in the mile run. Her time of 5:15.48 was over 10 seconds faster than anyone else in the 25-person field and was good enough to be considered an ECAC qualifier.

The Cardinals will be back in action this Saturday when they head to Boston to take part in the Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston University. The indoor meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

PSU Make-A-Wish Dinner Saturday

PLATTSBURGH —The Ninth-Annual Chartwells/Cardinal Hockey Make-A-Wish Dinner will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Warren Ballrooms in the Angell College Center on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh. The charity dinner is slated to run from 5:30-11 p.m. and all proceeds from the event will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Northeastern New York.

The event will feature a buffet dinner, live and silent auctions, a 50/50 drawing and live skits performed by members of the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team. Items for auction will include Plattsburgh State hockey apparel, NHL memorabilia and numerous products donated by local businesses.
