Red Storm unable to complete comeback against OFA

OGDENSBURG — Despite overcoming a 2-0 deficit midway through the second period, the Saranac Lake boys’ hockey team surrendered an overtime goal to Ogdensburg Free Academy’s Brandon Mullin, dropping a 3-2 setback in the opening day of the Wade Memorial Tournament Friday.

Brandon Mullin and Gian Rufa helped the Blue Devils reach a 2-0 lead at 6:38 and 7:54 of the second period, respectively. The first was a power play goal, while second tally was a shorthanded marker.

However, the lead was short lived.

Blake Battistoni registered his second of the year with 5:25 remaining in the middle stanza to cut the deficit to one.

Quinn Urquhart was able to garner the third period’s lone marker at the 12:32 mark.

“When they went up 2-0, I thought we showed a lot of heart by coming back and making a game of it,” Red Storm coach Will Ellsworth said. “Our guys were fatigued, but gave a very solid effort.”

Mullin’s second of the contest proved to be the game-winner.

Dave Prudhomme was credited with the win in net, fending off 26 of 28 shots faced.

Freshman Justin Farmer, who was making his first varsity start between the pipes, was able to register 25 saves on 28 shots.

“Considering the fact we brought 12 players for this trip, I’m very happy with how we played,” Ellsworth said. “Only two penalties were called, so it was a clean game throughout. (Farmer) made 25 saves, and I was impressed with his performance in a tough environment.”
