Plattsburgh State men hold off Brockport

When McIntosh hit a layup with 14:17 remaining, Plattsburgh held its biggest lead of the game to that point, at 61-52. McIntosh then hit two from the line with 13:30 remaining to make it 63-53.

But Brockport battled all the way back and grabbed a 71-69 lead on Matt Lee’s layup with 7:16 left.

The Cardinals, however, answered and went back up by seven, at 78-71, on McIntosh’s layup at the 2:08 mark.

The Golden Eagles got back to within two before Hodgson hit two from the line and Correa the second of two foul shots with four seconds remaining to make it an 82-78 game.

Ivy then hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to account for the final score.

“They really attack the ball and we did a good job of hanging on to it,” said Curle. “I was happy with the way we took care of the ball.

“They’re small, quick and aggressive. We played man-to-man on the first possession of the game and then switched to a 2-3 zone the rest of the way. We did play man-to-man on the final possession.”

The Golden Eagles (8-5, 3-3), who had a six-game winning streak come to an end, were led by John Ivy with 21 points, followed by Brandon Caruthers with 15, Lance Legister 13, Lee 13 and Jordan Major, 10.

Brockport connected on 15-of-38 from 3-point range, but hurt itself with an eight-of-18 performance from the charity stripe.

“They’re not very big — they take a lot of threes,” said Curle. “I told the guys before the season that every conference game was going to be a battle like this.”

The Cardinals, who have split two weekends on the road in conference play, are 2-0 at home and return to Memorial Hall this coming weekend for games against New Paltz and Oneonta.
