---- — UTICA — The Clinton Community College women’s basketball team stayed with second-ranked Onondaga Community College in the first half Saturday.
The Cougars, however, went cold from the field in the second half and dropped a 73-57 decision in the Division III, Region III Tournament semifinals.
The Lazers held a 36-33 lead at the half before outscoring the Cougars, 37-24, after intermission.
“We played a great first half,” said Clinton coach Donna Dixon. “We came out with a lot of energy and did a great job stopping their transition game.
“But we couldn’t buy a basket in the second half. They could shoot the three and moved the ball very well. They’re pretty quick and spread us out. We just had one of those halves — if we had stayed hot we could have stayed with them.”
Jenna Johnson hit five 3-pointers while finishing with 19 points for the Lazers. Lauren Roy added 12 points, Nacirema Mann 11 and both Kayla Kibling and Kaitlynne Knapp 10 apiece.
Katrina Garrand poured in a game-high 25 points for the Cougars and added seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Emily Decker followed with 17 points and seven rebounds. Alisha Ducatte scored nine points and Ruth Paul added eight rebounds.
“We had a great season,” said Dixon. “It was disappointing to lose, but I couldn’t be prouder of these girls. They started a little slow, but finished really strong. We got great leadership from our sophomores and it really showed in the second half of the season.
“I couldn’t be happier.”
Yesterday, the sixth-seeded Cougars eliminated third-seeded Herkimer Community College in the quarterfinals.
The Cougars ended the season with a 16-10 overall record and Saturday’s game may have been the final one for Dixon as coach
of the team.
“I told the girls that I’m going out and I wanted to go out with them,” said Dixon. “I have mixed feelings and the future is up in the air. We’ll see.”
