Demarais leads Saints to win

SARANAC LAKE — Stephanie Demarais put the icing on the cake with two free throws with under five seconds remaining to give the North Country Community College women’s basketball team a thrilling 49-48 victory over Word of Life.

The Saints were faced with a 21-16 halftime deficit and managed to score only five points in the last 11 minutes of the opening stanza.

“We showed some resiliency (Friday),” North Country head coach Jerrad Dumont said. “Shelby Gausby made an impact in the second half, scoring 15 points. It was nice to finally get our first win of the season.”

North Country was in the midst of a back-and-forth affair, trading buckets throughout the entire duration of the contest.

“We had some key defensive stops,” Dumont said. “It enabled to get some open looks on offense. We were down three late, but were fortunate to bounce back.”

Paul Smith’s 93,

Unity College 71

PAUL SMITHS — With an aggressive defensive effort and improved attack in transition offense, Paul Smith’s picked up a 93-71 victory over Unity College Friday.

Devon Carr led all scorers with 25 points and six rebounds, while Shiva Senthil chipped in for 21 points in the 22-point win.

“We were able to pressure (Unity) early and force them into some difficult shots leading to good opportunities on offense,” North Country head coach Joe Akey said. “However, I was not pleased with how we came out in the second half. They cut the lead down to 13, but we were able to keep our focus and composure to push it back to 25 with five minutes left.”
