PLATTSBURGH — After losing one-goal games in its last two SUNY Athletic Conference contests, the Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team didn’t take that chance Saturday.
Tom Duggan, Robbie Ashlaw and Brendan Damm scored three goals each as the Cardinals (9-4, 2-2) got back into the win column with a 16-11 victory over Oswego (4-6, 0-3) at the Plattsburgh State Field House Lacrosse Complex.
Duggan, Ashlaw and Damm also combined for seven assists, with Damm collecting four, Ashley two and Duggan one.
Andrew Hauk helped preserve the win in net for the Cardinals with 19 saves.
Tim Lawrence added two goals and an assist for Plattsburgh, while James Read, Courtney Cox, Mikey Gay, Charlie Dullea and Jack Felter all chipped in with one goal apiece.
Connor Khammer led the Lakers with four goals and two assists, while Nick Giampaolo added two goals and an assist. Wyatt Russo made eight saves in the Oswego nets.
In their last two games against Cortland and Potsdam, the Cardinals were held in check offensively in the second half.
Saturday, however, Plattsburgh held an 8-6 halftime lead before outscoring the Lakers, 6-2, for a 14-8 advantage after three.
The Lakers cut their deficit to one goal, at 8-7 and then 9-8, in the third before the Cardinals rattled off the final five goals of the period — two by Damm and one apiece from Guay, Lawrence and Ashlaw.
Oswego got to within 14-10 by scoring the first two goals of the fourth period. But goals by Ashlaw and Dullea put the Cardinals back up by six, at 16-10.
The Lakers added the game’s final goal with 3:32 remaining.
It was a back-and-forth first period with the two teams battling to a 4-all tie.
Ashlaw, Felter, Lawrence and Read then scored in the first seven minutes of the third stanza to give Plattsburgh an 8-4 lead. Goals by Cody Hoose and Giampaolo pulled the Lakers to within 8-6 at the half.
