LaLone captures second-team honors

CORTLAND — Plattsburgh State midfielder Emily LaLone has been named to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) women’s soccer second-team.

It marks the second time the 2013 team captain has earned a spot on an All-SUNYAC squad as she represented the Cardinals on the third-team at the conclusion of the 2011 season.

During her final year as a collegian, LaLone led the Cardinals in terms of total shots (49) and finished second among her teammates in shots on goal (19). Additionally, she was one of just two players on the Plattsburgh roster who started all 18 games and her minutes played total of 1,560 was the highest figure on the squad.

Her offensive mindset helped the senior rank seventh in the 10-team SUNYAC in terms of shots (49) and shots per game (2.72).

The Watertown product scored two goals in 2013, one of which turned out to be the game winner in Plattsburgh’s 4-0 victory over Clarkson on Sept. 24. She also added an assist against Buffalo State to up her season point total to five.

In total, LaLone played in all 71 games during her career and was in the starting lineup for 70 of them. She amassed 10 goals and five assists for 25 points in her days sporting a Plattsburgh uniform.

Sydney Aveson named ECAC West Goalie of the Week

CENTERVILLE, Mass. — Plattsburgh State women’s hockey players Sydney Aveson and Shannon Stewart both received Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West honors for the week ending Nov. 10.

Aveson was named Goalie of the Week, while Stewart collected an honor roll selection.

Aveson earns Goalie of the Week for the second-straight week. After recording 11 shots in the top-ranked Cardinals’ 8-0 win against Potsdam last Tuesday, she then posted a 16-save shutout against Castleton. The West Covina, Calif., native has four shutouts in four games for the undefeated Cardinals.

Stewart landed on the honor roll after registering five points last week. In the league-opener at Potsdam, she scored four of the Cardinals’ eight goals. The junior forward then assisted on the only goal scored against Castleton.

Plattsburgh continues its current home stand with a pair of conference games against Buffalo State this Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
