---- — NORTHFIELD, Vt. — Opportunities for offense were plentiful to say the least for the Plattsburgh State women’s soccer team, which received a six-point afternoon from junior Charisse Abellard during an 11-0 romp over Norwich in the final game of the season for both squads on Tuesday afternoon.
The Cardinals (5-11-2) pushed their single-game goal total to double digits for the first time since September 20, 2008, when the squad earned a 15-0 triumph at then-SUNYAC foe Morrisville State. During Tuesday’s one-sided match, Plattsburgh State outshot the Cadets (1-16) 40-3 and outpaced the home team in corner kicks 8-1.
It took just 36 seconds for Plattsburgh State to tally what would hold up to be the game winner. Freshman forward Diana DiCocco notched her fifth goal of the season by racing past the entire Norwich back line before blasting her shot attempt past Cadets’ keeper Holly Lutz and into the left corner of the net.
The Cardinals experienced their longest scoring drought of the game – almost 36 minutes – before Christen Averill added one of Plattsburgh State’s numerous insurance goals. The sophomore out of Saugerties, N.Y., netted the first goal of her collegiate career, heading a corner kick by Abellard past Lutz at 36:04.
Shortly thereafter, Abellard added her first goal of the match. The Plattsburgh product rifled her free kick at 39:17 over the head of Lutz to up the Cardinals’ lead to 3-0.
In the early stages of the second half, sophomore Cassidy Clavet really opened the floodgates for the visitors with two of the next three goals for the Cardinals. Freshman Maddy Trombley chipped in her first collegiate goal to at 56:30 to account for the third Plattsburgh State score in the first 13:17 of the deciding frame.
Through the course of the final 27:04, the Cardinals pumped in five more goals – including one more by Abellard to make matters 10-0. The junior’s second goal of the season came after she had collected her second assist of the match on the first goal of the season by Ashlie Guinness which made it a 9-0 game.
Vicky Scott (62:56), Melissa Rodriguez (65:16) and Sara Elliott (76:16) were the other three goal scorers for the Cardinals.
Of the 40 shots taken by the visiting squad, DiCocco registered a game-high seven which included four on goal. Freshman Anissa Hartmann amassed some six shots during the 90-minute bout – three of which tested Lutz.
Plattsburgh State netminder Kristy Kirkpatrick (4-7-1) was largely untested throughout the afternoon, needing to make just two saves in her fourth clean-sheet effort of the season. Lutz made 13 saves for the Cadets.
The game marked the end of the careers of Plattsburgh State’s two seniors: Emily LaLone and Lauren Gonyea. The latter was credited with an assist on Clavet’s first goal of the match.
