Pats, Hornets land in 'B' semifinals

CHAMPLAIN — The AuSable Valley girls’ soccer team, which won the Section VII Class C championship a season ago, has its hands full as the fifth seed in this year’s Class B tournament.

It started out well, however, for the Patriots on Wednesday night in a 2-0 win at fourth-seeded Northeastern Clinton in the quarterfinals.

“It was a good start for us,” AuSable Valley coach Bruce Bourgeois said. “Everyone on our team played a great game (Wednesday). Northeastern Clinton has a fast team and is a well-coached team.

“We know it’s going to be a tougher road for us this year. We play Saranac on Saturday and they’re a great team. But the first time we played them, they beat us by a 2-1 score.”

All the game’s scoring was done in the second half, with Rachel Knapp scoring from Taylor Saltus at 6:50 and then Hillary Drake, off a Saltus assist, at 14:15.

“Taylor Saltus did a great job setting up things for us,” Bourgeois said. “It helps to have her finally healthy. And I can’t say enough about our defense. Our back four, with Logan Snow, Priscilla Coats, Tiffany Evens and Alyssa Baughn, were fantastic.”

Bryce Douglass recorded the shutout in the AuSable Valley nets with nine saves, while Christina Paola made five stops for the Cougars, who held a 14-9 shot advantage.
