PSU men rebound for win over New Paltz

---- — NEW PALTZ — After suffering two heartbreaking overtime losses in SUNY Athletic Conference play, the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team got a much-needed win with a 2-0 decision at New Paltz on Saturday afternoon.

Tom Greene and Matt Hamilton scored first-half goals for the Cardinals (9-3-1, 3-2).

“Absolutely, it was a must win for us,” Plattsburgh coach Chris Waterbury said. “It was a good bounce-back win. The guys came out and gave it everything they had and you can’t ask for more than that.

“It was a good team effort.”

Greene, shaking off an injury suffered the day before, opened the scoring off a rebound just 3:46 into the game.

“Greene gave it a go in the first half and gutted it out,” Waterbury said. “He injured his hip (Friday) and gave us what he could (Saturday).”

Hamilton then made it 2-0 on a free kick at the 21:35 mark.

“We were able to score early and then again — that was massive for us to get those two goals,” Waterbury said.

“What was unfortunate, however, was that we created so many other chances, but could not get the third goal that would have put them away.”

Plattsburgh ended up with a 15-9 advantage in shots and Mitchell Jordon needed to make just one save for the shutout. Andres Montoya stopped seven shots for the Hawks (3-9-2, 2-4).

“We were able to control most of the game,” Waterbury said. “We did some good things and tried to shuffle people in and out because of tired legs.

“We lost C.J. Pourakis to an injury (Friday) and Ethan Votraw sprained his ankle (Saturday). Nick Parrella, after getting the ball to Greene on our first goal, was also injured and he did not play after that. It was a tough weekend for us, but we did what we had to do.

“Guys like Wade Goehle, Nelson Vetter, Nick Economou and Matt Hamilton logged a lot of minutes for us on the weekend and were absolute warriors.

The Cardinals return home to host Buffalo State on Friday and Fredonia on Saturday at the Field House Soccer Complex.

“No question, it’s going to be nice to get back home,” Waterbury said. “I’m giving the guys Sunday and Monday off, and it’s back to practice on Tuesday for what will be an important weekend for us.”
