CLINTONVILLE — The Ticonderoga football team was opportunistic from the get-go Friday.
The Sentinels (4-1) jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead, while five different players finished with touchdowns in their 35-6 defeat of AuSable Valley in Champlain Valley Athletic Conference play.

“Everyone contributes to the team,” Ticonderoga running back Cameron Wright said. “The offensive line, all the backs— everybody. (Michael) Graney had a great game. It’s just a team sport and that’s what we do. We push as a team.”
The Sentinels, who entered the game ranked No. 19 in the latest New York State Sportswriters Association Class D poll, put up their first points at 2:44 of the first quarter.
Konner Bruce scored on a three-yard run.
Then, with the Patriots (1-4) driving to Ticonderoga’s 20-yard line, Anthony DuShane picked off AuSable Valley quarterback John Goodnough and ran 75 yards for a touchdown.
“They had a nice drive going, and I think that was big to kind of put momentum back on our side and give us a two-score lead,” Sentinels coach Bob Sutphen said.
Goodnough entered the game with 794 all-purpose yards, but was tackled for a loss on seven occasions. The senior signal-caller finished with zero rushing yards on 20 attempts.
“He’s a very good scrambler and you’ve really got to try and frame him up and down the field,” Sutphen said. “At the same time, he’ll try to launch the ball down the middle of the field on you. He’s got a decent enough arm to be able to do that. We were fortunate that we didn’t lose contain too often. We did frame him where we needed to, and we were able to drag him down.”
Ty Denno made it 19-0 Ticonderoga when he hauled in a four-yard pass from Graney on a quick slant. Garrison Hughes’ reception on the ensuing two-point conversion gave the Sentinels a 21-0 lead.
Graney tossed his second touchdown of the night to Ryan Trudeau 1:22 later.
“We’re happy with how we’re doing so far,” Graney said. “We don’t want to get complacent. We always want to keep looking forward to our next opponent and just keep working hard every week in practice.”
Wright made his end zone appearance with 5:55 remaining in third quarter, bouncing off AuSable Valley tacklers for a touchdown.
Dillon Savage registered the Patriots’ lone score on a four-yard run at 8:07 of the third quarter.
Graney paced Ticonderoga, going 5-for-9 through the air with 80 yards and two touchdowns. Wright totaled seven carries for 54 yards and a touchdown.
Despite being tackled for a loss seven times, Goodnough was 9-of-14 for 150 yards, which included two interceptions to DuShane and Dominic Banish.
Savage finished with 20 carries for 57 yards and one touchdown.
The Sentinels scored 35 points on 29 plays from scrimmage.
With the win, Ticonderoga improved to 4-1 on the year. The Sentinels play host to Saranac Friday.
“If you start listening to everybody tell you how good you are, you’re not going to end up anywhere,” Sutphen said. “There’s enough parity in this league this year that you’re going to get beat on any given week if you don’t really focus or work hard.
“The only thing we’re thinking about right now is Saranac. That’s really where my focus is. Next Friday night, they’re going to come down ready to go and ready to pound on us. We’ve got to be able to meet that challenge.”
