Hoops season starts by honoring 'Muggsy' Favro

Saranac Central School will jump-start the Northern Basketball League season when it hosts the inaugural Muggsy’s Tip-Off Classic today and Saturday.

The tournament honors the memory of local sports legend Philip “Muggsy” Favro, who passed away April 17.

The Muggsy’s Tip-Off Classic features four boys’ JV and varsity teams as well as four girls’ JV and varsity teams.

Northeastern Clinton, Peru, Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake and Saranac highlight the early-season tournament.

“Muggsy was an icon to Saranac athletics mainly because of his focus toward the kids, no matter the sport,” Athletic Director and boys’ basketball coach Brent Denis said. “From a basketball perspective, he was always in the gym. He was there every day as a role model and mentor. He loved sports but loved the kids of Saranac even more.”

Saranac has established a t-shirt sale with all proceeds going to the Muggsy Favro Scholarship Fund. There will be a ceremonial jump ball and presentation between championship games Saturday.

“Basically, we took pre-orders and offered all participating schools t-shirts in advance,” Denis said. “T-shirts will be sold on site at $12 apiece. There’s no better way to honor Muggsy than to have 300 people walking around with a t-shirt recognizing his legacy.”

Trophies will be presented, and All-Tournament selections will be made at the conclusion of each championship game Saturday.

“Everybody is excited,” Denis said. “It has generated a ton of enthusiasm, even from the visiting schools. When the first game tips off at 4:15 p.m. (today), it might be the first tip-off in New York State. As Muggsy would say, ‘Let’s get the games going.’”

All-day admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students.
