Lions' Whalen, Orange's Bain lead way for MVAC girls' basketball All-Stars

Elizabethtown-Lewis and Indian Lake/Long Lake were the teams to beat during the 2012-13 Mountain & Valley Athletic Conference girls’ basketball season.

The Lions went a perfect 15-0 through their MVAC season, while the Orange’s lone loss in conference came against Elizabethtown-Lewis.

Keene was a surprise team in the MVAC South Division this season, while Minerva/Newcomb also proved to be a tough out.

For their outstanding season, one that finished with a Section VII Class D championship, the Lions had five players selected to the selected to the North Division All-Star Team, including Most Valuable Player, Lily Whalen.

Indian Lake/Long Lake, meanwhile, had three players selected to the South Division All-Star Team, which includes Most Valuable Player, Jessica Bain.

Keene also had three players land on the All-Star Team.


Lily Whalen (Elizabethtown-Lewis)- Whalen, a junior, led a strong Elizabethtown-Lewis offense with a 14.8 point-per-game average.

She also connected on 22 3-pointers on the season.

Whalen helped the Lions to a 19-2 record and a Section VII Class D championship with a win over Moriah.


Shonna Brooks (Elizabethtown-Lewis)- Brooks, a junior, was second on the team in scoring as she averaged 12.6 points per game.

She finished in double figures in scoring this season 15 times this season, including a season-high 22 points in a win over Chazy.

Brendee Russell (Westport)- Russell, a junior, led a very young Westport team with an average of 14.2 points per game.

She landed in double figures in all but two of her games on the season, and scored a season-high 23 points in an early-season loss to Keene.

Russell helped the Eagles to an 8-11 record on the season, despite having only one senior on their roster.
