ROCHESTER — It was a Damm good victory for the Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team on Saturday.
Brendan Damm scored three goals, including the game-winner with 1:33 left in regulation, as the Cardinals (7-2, 1-0) opened their SUNY Athletic Conference season by edging out a 12-11 decision over Geneseo (2-4, 0-1) in less-than-ideal weather conditions at Monroe Community College.
Damm scored all of his goals in the third period when the two teams combined for nine goals.
The Cardinals and Knights entered the fourth tied at 7-all.
Damm gave Plattsburgh the lead just eight seconds in before Geneseo answered on Sam Thompson’s goal.
Goals by Damm and Jack Felter then put the Cardinals back on top, 10-8, only to have the Knights come back to knot it up once again on goals by Joe Chiara and Steve Cregan.
Tom Duggan gave Plattsburgh an 11-10 advantage with 3:38 remaining and Chiara tied it for the final time with 2:08 left.
The Cardinals held a 48-35 edge in shots, but the big difference in the contest was on face-offs where Plattsburgh won 18-of-25, including just about every one in the fourth period.
James Read contributed two goals and two assists for Plattsburgh, while Felter and Matt Renko chipped in with two goals apiece. Duggan, James Higgins and Charlie Dullea each added one goal.
Andrew Hauk turned away eight shots in the Plattsburgh nets and Ryan Zaremba finished with 14 saves for Geneseo.
Cregan paced the Knights with three goals and two assists, followed by Thompson with three goals and Chiara, two.
Geneseo led by a goal three times in the first period before settling for a 3-2 advantage.
It was a 5-all contest in the second stanza before two goals by Cregan lifted the Knights into a 7-5 lead at the half.
Plattsburgh then kept Geneseo off the board in the third while getting goals by Felter and Read two minutes apart midway through to tie it entering the fourth.
