ARNOLD, Md. — A hat trick by Brendan Damm and another four points by Robbie Ashlaw weren’t enough to propel the Plattsburgh State men’s lacrosse team to a win Wednesday.
The Cardinals dropped an 8-7 nonconference decision to Connecticut College. The Camels’ Tyler Hegarty scored a game-high four goals, the last of which proved to be the game-winner.
It was just the second loss of the season for Plattsburgh (5-2), while Connecticut College (4-2) won its second one-goal game this year.
The game was tied at 5-all entering the fourth period.
But Connecticut College ran off three unanswered goals, including two by Hegarty, to grab an 8-5 lead.
Damm got one back for the Cardinals, and James Read then made it a one-goal game with 2:53 remaining.
But Plattsburgh wasn’t able to get the equalizer.
Damm opened the scoring by pumping in his conference-leading 14th goal of the season 7:28 into the first period.
But with 2:24 left in the opening frame, Hegarty slung in the equalizer.
Pressing the attack to begin the second period, the Cardinals were rewarded when James Higgins and Ashlaw tallied in the first two minutes to make it 3-1.
The Plattsburgh lead didn’t last long, as Chad Sawyer tallied twice to pull the Camels into a 3-3 halftime tie.
Tom Duggan’s goal midway through the third period gave Plattsburgh what would be its final lead of the game.
Thomas Woessner and Hegarty then rallied Connecticut College into the 5-4 advantage before Damm tied it.
Andrew Hauk recorded five saves in the Plattsburgh nets, and Bobby Bleistein stopped nine shots for Connecticut College. Joe Eiseman gathered a game-high five ground balls for the Cardinals.
Next up for Plattsburgh will be a nonconference game Saturday at the University of Scranton.
