Saranac Lake's Adam Van Nortwick and Peru's Chris Henderson lead the Section VII state qualifiers in track & field.

Karissa Fuller strikes out 14 and Tara Vilardo belts a 2-run homer to lead Ticonderoga to an 8-1 win over Seton Catholic, giving the Knights their first Section VII Class C softball title.

Casey Gajewski pitches a 2-hitter with 12 strikeouts as Moriah thumps reigning champion Crown Point 13-1 to win the Section VII Class D softball crown. Megan Brace and Julie Walter each score 3 runs while Sarah Bezon drives in 2 runs with 2 hits.

Kelly Gordon turns in 7 strong innings on the mound and AuSable Valley stuns top-seed Ticonderoga 4-2 in the Section VII Class C baseball final.

Jared Hammond and Bryan Popp deliver 2-run singles in the bottom of the seventh to give Moriah a 5-4 triumph over Bolton in the Class D baseball title game.

Erica Buckley tosses a one-hitter with 12 strikeouts and Alexandra Brown drives in 3 runs with a pair of doubles to lead Saranac to a 9-0 win over Northeastern Clinton in the Section VII Class B softball final.

20 YEARS AGO (1992)

Bryan Law, Alex Wiseman and Fred Hughes lead the boys while Laura Werner, Kerry Harwood, Alison Hastings and Ginger Otis pace the girls as the Malone Huskies sweep the Section X track & field track crowns.

Laura LaHart claims 4 firsts and Levander Choplin, 3, to lead Peru to a sweep of the Section VII track titles. Peru's Sara Facteau nips Patty McCormick of Seton Catholic in a record-setting 1,500-meter run.

Alvin Nolette gets the win in relief and helps his cause with 2 hits as Elizabethtown-Lewis downs Crown Point 10-7 in the MVAC baseball final.

Brandy McDonald pitches a 2-hitter with 15 strikeouts and Geoff Duquette collects 3 hits in Plattsburgh High's 8-0 win over Beekmantown in the Section VII Class B baseball final.

Jennifer Sayward drives in 4 runs with 5 hits while Jill Wintermute and Shelly Sayward each get 4 hits apiece to lead Willsboro to a 32-8 win over Keene for the MVAC softball title.

25 YEARS AGO (1987)


Russell Holland Jeff Jiampetti each belt 2 homers and Rick Garrand adds a solo shot to power St. John's to a 9-8 win over AuSable Valley in the Section VII Class C baseball final.

Leon Ting wins singles while Matt Guest and Todd Collins capture doubles as Plattsburgh High caps a perfect season in CVAC and Section VII tennis.

John Zurlo shoots 74, John Dawson adds a 78 and Bryan Bechard, a 79, to lead Northeastern Clinton to its fourth Section VII golf championship in 11 years.

Dean Rock rips a 2-run homer to send MAI on to a 22-4 rout of PHS in the Section VII Class B baseball final.

Rita Boule pitches a one-hitter and Michele Tougas goes 3-for-4 with 4 RBI, leading MAI to a 9-0 win over Peru and its third straight Section VII Class B softball crown.

Plattsburgh High's Scott Carpenter edges rival Mike Barber of Ticonderoga in the 400-meter hurdles while Clare Sydzlik of St. John's nips Ticonderoga's Kellie Grinnell in the girls' 400-meter hurdles to highlight the CVAC individual championships.

30 YEARS AGO (1982)

John Petro and George Latour rip 3-run homers to power Peru to a 8-3 win over Beekmantown in a playoff for the CVAC Div. I crown.

Joe Grohman shoots an 80 to lead PHS to a 2-stroke victory over Lake Placid in the Section VII golf tournament. John and George Bissell each come in with 82s while Mike Rose shoots an 82. Moriah's Doug McCabe is the medalist with a 78 at the Lake Placid Club Resort.

Rich Hall smacks a 2-run double and Chris Speziali adds a 2-run single as Schroon Lake knocks off previously unbeaten Keene 6-5.

Bobby O'Brien gets 3 hits and drives in 3 runs in Northern Adirondack's 8-1 upset of PHS.

Winning pitcher Shawn Wintermute goes 4-for-4 and Theresa Cross drives in 3 runs as Willsboro upsets previously unbeaten Elizabethtown-Lewis 7-5 in the MVAC softball title game. Angie McCoy rips a 3-run triple for the Lions.

Whitney Abbott upsets Peru's Scott Lucy in the 3,200 meters while Darrin Rathbun and Jim Kent shine in their specialities to lead Ticonderoga to the boys' track title. Cass Pearl, Lisa Yuska and Becky Palmer lead St. John's to its third straight girls' championship.

40 YEARS AGO (1972)

Plattsburgh High senior Mary Beth Gagnier wins the Girls' Handicap Division with a 9-game score of 1,656 at the New York State Junior Bowling Championships. She is the first area junior to win a state title.

Freshman Dan Ryan lines a single to right scoring Tim Tucker from third with the winning run as Ticonderoga stuns previously unbeaten Peru 7-6 in CVL baseball.

Calvin Miller strikes out 2 batters with the bases loaded to nail down Plattsburgh High's 3-2 win over St. John's. Carl Dragoon doubles in 2 runs and John Francis adds an RBI double for the only hits off hard-luck losing pitcher Tim Leary. Kevin Boissey belts a solo homer for the Irish.

Scott Phinney's 2-run homer and Dave Olcott's 2-run double help Elizabethtown-Lewis defeat Willsboro 11-6. Mike Jerdo clubs a 2-run homer for Willsboro while Pat Oliver picks up 3 hits.

50 YEARS AGO (1962)

Jimmy Duprey socks 2 homers and drives in 5 runs to power Peru to an 8-6 win over Beekmantown. Gary Garrow is 3-for-4 for the Eagles.

Nick Bourke of St. Mary's pitches a no-hitter and Lefty Filion gets 2 hits with a double in a 2-1 victory over OLVA.

Jimmy Baker belts a 3-run homer and PHS goes on to beat OLVA 9-4 and capture the city championship.

Mike Alteri goes 3-for-4 and Norm Delorm strikes out 8 in Ticonderoga's 8-1 win over Keeseville.

White, MacPhail, Blackmore and Gough all collect 2 hits as Elizabethown upends previously unbeaten Westport 9-6.

Chazy's Robin Brown strikes out 15 in a 16-1 win over Ellenburg.

60 YEARS AGO (1952)

Tom O'Neill scatters 7 hits in pitching AuSable Forks to a 4-0 win over Plattsburgh High.

Plattsburgh native Ken Hoeffert, who overcame polio, returns to the city to produce and star in Blades on Ice, a week-long ice extravaganza at Bailey Ave. Park.

Ron MacDougal pitches a 4-hitter as Willsboro clinches the MVL crown with a 15-1 thumping of Elizabethtown.

Phil O'Connell drills a 3-run homer and Rod Collins is the winning pitcher in Plattsburgh High's 10-5 win over MAI.

Chamberlain outduels Burdo to give Keeseville a 2-1 win over OLVA.

Bill Durnin pitches a 5-inning no-hitter and Hawk Islas contributes a 2-run double in Lyon Mountain's doubleheader sweep of Rouses Point.

70 YEARS AGO (1942)

Chazy's Bernie Egan earns a letter as a second baseman and outfielder for the Springfield College baseball team.

Don MacDonald of Mooers strikes out 18 in a 3-0 victory over Altona.

Cadyville's Arnold Beauchemin hurls his second successive no-hitter, beating Peru 4-3.

Bob LaFountain's pitching enables unbeaten MAI to rally past Rouses Point for a 5-2 victory.
