---- — GREENSBORO,N.C. — Genna Hartung recovered from a stumble on the final water jump Friday to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The national meet will be held June 6-8 in Eugene, Ore.
Hartung, who starred at Seton Catholic, finished seventh out of 46 competitors in the NCAA East Regional Track & Field Championships at North Carolina A&T. The Cornell University senior was third in her heat with a new personal-best of 10 minutes, 6.74 seconds — nearly four seconds faster than her previous best.
In fourth place after stumbling briefly on the last water jump, Hartung picked up her pace and sprinted the final 150 meters to move into third place and grab the automatic qualifying spot.
“Watching Genna run that race was honestly the most inspirational thing ever,” said teammate Rachel Sorna, also a steeplechase runner. “She ran textbook perfect.” Sorna finished second, overall, with a time of 9:56.57.
Hartung reached the NCAA Outdoor Championship last year as well where she took 13th place overall and got under the “B” standard for the Olympic Trials.
