Saranac wins wrestling tournament

ONEONTA — The Saranac varsity wrestling team continued its strong season over the weekend with a first-place performance in the Dan Wickham Classic, hosted by Unatego Central School.

John Devins (106), Codie Gillette (138) and Paul Herrera (220) won their weight classes for the Chiefs, who finished with 241.5 points.

Second place in the 17-team field went to Adirondack with 223 points, followed by Cortland (191) in third, W.T. Clarke from Long Island (169.5) fourth, Walton (150.5) fifth and host Unatego (140) sixth.

Devins went 3-0 on the day and pinned Chenango Valley’s Jacob Lehr in his championship match.

Gillette finished 4-0, including a 12-1 win over Clarke’s Tyler Consentine in his title match.

“Codie had an impressive win,” Saranac coach Heath Smith said. “He also received the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament award.”

Herrera, who also went 4-0 on the day, posted a pin over Unadilla Valley’s Alex Avolio in the finals.

“All three champions wrestled very well,” Smith said.

Finishing second for Saranac was Jake Nolan at 99 and James Black at 152.

Chenango Valley’s Caleb Wiggins recorded an 11-1 decision over Nolan in the finals, while Black dropped a 7-6 decision to Sidney’s Dylan Gifford.

“James was ahead by four and got caught in a 5-point move with 15 seconds left,” Smith said. “That was a tough loss.”
