Miners open 3-game lead in CVBL


---- — LYON MOUNTAIN — The first-place Lyon Mountain Miners are pulling away from the competition in the Champlain Valley Baseball League.

The Miners improved their record to 8-2 on Sunday with a 4-2, 7-6 twinbill sweep of the Meron’s Expos at the Big Ball Diamond.

Lyon Mountain jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the opener and held on the rest of the way.

David Waldron went the distance for the pitching win. Billy Davis ended up taking the loss in both contests.

Luke Weaver led the Miners with two hits and a RBI, while Jerry Kowalowski added a double and RBI.

Cliff Conners and Paul Bruno paced the Expos with two hits each.

There was more offense in the second game as the Miners were led by Tory Bouyea with a double and triple, Kris Chase a double and two singles, Kyle Kowalowski a three-run homer and Derek Juntunen two hits.

Chris VanHouten allowed two runs over the first five innings to get the win.

Glenn Engstrom was the hitting star for Meron’s with three hits, including a double and a grand slam. His grand slam came in the seventh inning and cut the Expos’ deficit to one run. Bruno chipped in with two singles.

SARANAC — The Fourth Ward Cardinals split a doubleheader for the fifth week in a row.

Matt Rivers bested Alex LaFountain in the first game as the Peabody’s Padres eked out a win.

Rivers struck out four, walked two and allowed six hits, while LaFountain finished with seven strikeouts, one walk and surrendered five hits.

The lone run of the game was scored in the fourth when Mark Eggleston singled, moved up on an error and scored on Zach Myers’ two-out single.

Joe Tolosky and Bret Bosley paced the Cardinals with two hits each and Steve Livsey added a double.

In the nightcap, C.J. Worley led the way for the Cardinals with a single, double and three RBI, while Tom Neale and LaFountain added two hits apiece. Frank Buksa added a two-run homer and Tolosky a solo shot.

Neale struck out eight in getting the pitching win.

Eggleston rapped three doubles for the Padres, while Shane Perrotte added a single and double, and Andrew Petro a two-run single.

PLATTSBURGH — Joe Kirkpatrick outdueled Kyle Bisonette in the first game to lead the Fourth Ward A’s to their win.

In the second game, the Fourth Ward Timberjaxx erased a 2-1 deficit with five runs in the sixth inning.

Kirkpatrick struck out five and allowed five hits, while Bisonette fanned seven and gave up five hits.

The A’s scored a run in the fourth when Casey Brighton singled and later scored on an error.

The Timberjaxx tied it in the fifth on doubles by Aaron Goldfarb and Jacques DeMars before the A’s regained the lead — this time for good — in the bottom of the inning on Jake Oswald’s RBI double.

In the second game, D.J. Barber picked up the pitching win for the Timberjaxx. He also helped his cause at the plate with two singles, while Bisonette added a double and single.

Tyler Mesec led the A’s with a single and double, while Goldfarb added a double.
