Adams Glass' season ends in Senior Babe Ruth title series

COLCHESTER, Vt. — The Adams Glass Senior Babe Ruth team took a 1-0 lead two batters into Monday night’s game.

But that would be one of the few highlights for the local team.

Host Colchester erased a 1-all tie with three runs in the third inning and defeated Adams Glass, 5-1, to claim the championship in the Vermont State Senior Babe Ruth Tournament.

“Being a good team isn’t always enough to win a championship — you need a little luck,” Adams Glass coach John Demarais said. “Our starting catcher, Kyle McCarthy, was injured at work and unable to play. He has been a workhorse for us behind the plate and showed great leadership all season.”

Adams Glass was also missing Jacob Kennedy, one of its leading hitters.

The Peru-based team jumped on the board quickly when Kevin Sousa led off the game with a double and scored on Nick Uliva’s single.

But, in the bottom of the second, J.R. Olson tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Colchester then took the lead for good in the third, scoring three runs with the benefit of just one hit.

Adams Glass threatened in the fourth and fifth innings, but was unable to get on the board. Colchester then added its final run in the bottom of the fifth on Jared Antoniak’s second sacrifice fly of the game.

Adams Glass threatened again in the seventh when Kyle Sprague, Luis Pepen-Matos and Alex Lamberton all singled to load the bases. But winning pitcher Devin Dessormeau, who struck out 11, walked three and allowed six hits, retired the next to batters to end any hopes of a comeback.

Sousa, Ryan McCall and Pepen-Matos all pitched for Adams Glass (18-8-1), with McCall taking the loss in relief.

“Early in the game, we had a hit-and-run, with their second baseman running over to cover the bag,” Demarais said. “The ball goes right to him for an easy double play. We hit the ball hard at times, but right at people. Their right fielder robbed Nick Uliva of a hit with a nice diving catch in the sixth inning.
