PHS girls drop overtime decision

MASSENA — Samantha Villnave tossed in 28 points and Massena outlasted Plattsburgh High, 53-49, in overtime on Saturday in nonconference girls’ basketball.

Jessica Rode added 13 points for the Red Raiders.

Kaylia Carper connected on four 3-pointers and ended up with 16 points to lead the Hornets. Shea Frady followed with 14 points.

Massena held a 21-18 lead at the half before Plattsburgh tied it at 29-29 after three. Both teams scored 16 points in the fourth to end regulation at 45-all. The Red Raiders then held an 8-4 scoring edge in overtime.

“Even though we fell short in overtime, I was proud of the way the team battled,” Plattsburgh coach Brad LaValley said. “The defensive intensity was there for the whole game and, offensively, we looked much better.

“It’s a step in the right direction and I hope this will give our players some confidence heading into league play after the break.”
