Strong lifts AuSable Valley over Fort Edward

FORT EDWARD — Meghan Strong scored 18 points, including four 3-pointers, to help power the AuSable Valley girls’ basketball team to a 59-37 nonconference win over Fort Edward on Friday.

Taylor Saltus added 14 points and Madison Rondeau 11 for the Patriots, who broke the game open after having a 26-21 halftime lead.

“We got into foul trouble in the first half and missed a ton of layups,” AuSable Valley coach Roger Long said. “That allowed the game to stay close.

“We opened up with a 17-4 run to start the second half and cruised the last 10 minutes. It was our second win over a state-ranked team and we’ll follow it up against another state-ranked team in Franklin Academy.”

MASSENA — The Hornets faced a 17-2 deficit after the first quarter and were never able to weather the storm.

“We just don’t have the personnel that can overcome that kind of deficit,” Plattsburgh High coach Brad LaValley said. “We need to find a scorer and someone to step up. Nobody’s stepping up. We just keep making the same mistakes. We’re not going to get any better if we don’t fix them.”

Morgan Fountain paced the Huskies with 11 points on five field goals. Rachel Lamica (9) and Megan O’Connor (7) combined for 16 points.

Ashley Marlow totaled five points for the Hornets. Ashley Carper added three points.
