Plattsburgh holds off Northeastern Clinton in boys' NBL

CHAMPLAIN — The Plattsburgh High boys’ basketball team has flexed its muscles on offense, averaging 62.7 points per game in the early going.

But its tenacious defense proved to be the x-factor Tuesday.

The Hornets (4-1, 3-0) held Northeastern Clinton to a combined 11 points in the first and third quarter, fending off the Cougars (6-1, 2-1) for a 46-45 win in Northern Basketball League play.

“PHS played great pressure defense,” Northeastern Clinton coach Robb Garrand said. “We dug too big of a hole, not taking care of the ball in the first quarter.”

Garrett Frady was the focal point for Plattsburgh High. Frady picked up 13 points, including three 3-pointers.

“Garrett Frady caused problems all night with his defensive pressure,” Garrand said. “Every team needs a floor general that can make things happen offensively and defensively. He communicates with his teammates and is a confident player that makes everyone around him better. Those are all the qualities Garrett brings to his team, which is why they are so successful.”

Taoufik Maknani added 13 points and Robert Matthews 10 points for the Hornets.

“We knew what their game plan would be offensively, and we got caught standing up defensively at times,” Garrand said. “I was proud of how our boys fought to the end, especially leading most of the game after the midway mark of the second quarter. To beat a team like PHS, you have to play your best every minute. We will continue to get better and look forward to the challenges ahead.”

Jon Filion paced the Cougars with 16 points. Harley Tavernia added 10 points.
