Knights shut down Lions in second half

ELIZABETHTOWN — Seton Catholic held Elizabethtown-Lewis to three points over the final two quarters Thursday to pull away to a 46-21 win in girls’ Northern Basketball League Division II play.

Seton Catholic took a 23-16 lead into halftime before outscoring Elizabethtown-Lewis 23-3 in the second half.

Paige Spittler powered the Knights with 12 points, while Gretchen Zalis added nine and Maddison Murnane had eight.

Lily Whalen scored 13 of the Lions’ 21 points. Elizabethtown-Lewis managed just eight field goals in the contest, and Whalen had five of those.

MORIAH 73, WILLSBORO 19

WILLSBORO — Six Moriah players scored eight points or more in a one-sided win over the Warriors.

Caitlin Pelkey led the way with 13 points and was followed by Madison Stahl with 12, Lauren Cross and Sarah Slattery with 10 apiece and Taylor Sprague and Lauren Brace with eight each.

The Vikings took a 36-12 lead into the halftime break and then held Willsboro scoreless in the third.

Rachael Burt and Trina Bigelow tossed in four points apiece for the Warriors.

WESTPORT 40, LAKE PLACID 20

WESTPORT — Brendee Russell and Danielle Schwoebel combined for 27 points in the Eagles’ win over the Blue Bombers.

Russell finished with 15 points, and Schwoebel added 12.

The hosts started slowly, trailing by a 4-2 margin after one quarter. But Westport went on a 19-6 run in the second for a 21-10 halftime lead and expanded it to 35-16 after three.

Hanna Potter led Lake Placid with seven points.
